Dirty Little Black Girls
by Patricia Ione Lloyd
Rebel domestic workers put their Park Slope employers on notice.
In Derek's nod to PFUNK and vogue culture, Bring the Beat Back, Tru Believers know the Musicship Megarhythmic is on its way to save them from the End of the World, but you can’t get on if you can’t get down, and somebody done stole the beat. With Woman to Woman, Ayanna pointedly uses the relationship of a plus-sized actress and a retired drag king to argue that love between black women is a political cause for us all to rally around. And finally, the women of color in Ione's dark comedy are sexy, tattooed, and rebellious smart stuffs -- all provocative tropes that the domestic workers of Dirty Little Black Girls embrace and challenge.
Ayanna, Derek, and Ione are all resident playwrights at Freedom Train Productions. Offstage Forums 2009, critical discussions inspired by their current work in development, preceded the performances.
In August Artistic & Managing Director Andre Lancaster released
a festival statement around the state of artist economies.
