If you see something, say something is a media campaign slogan used by the NYPD. But for some it is a slogan that can be used against the NYPD. Ponder this: You are outside a bar in late night Manhattan. You see two cops using excessive force to detain a young man of color. What do you do? This incident presents a common and striking conundrum for conscious folks living in New York City.
At this discussion, community members who have faced this dilemma will share their story. Our goal is to have an open conversation about police violence and bystander response as well as foster provocative moral questions for Freedom Train playwrights to consider centering their theatre work around.
To Resist or Not to Resist is free and open to the public. It is a part of Freedom Train's Offstage Series and is endorsed by Peoples' Justice: Community Control and Police Accountability, a coalition of NYC-based grassroots organizations that includes Audre Lorde Project, CAAAV Organizing Asian Communities, Desis Rising Up & Moving, Families United for Racial & Economic Equality, FIERCE!, Immigrant Justice Solidarity Project, Jews for Racial & Economic Justice, Justice Committee, Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, National Hip Hop Political Convention, and Nodutdol for Korean
